Protecting your skin

Skin is protected by a defense system “the acid mantle’
It is made up of lipids produced within the skin layers, water from the sweat glands, natural moisturizing factor (NMF, the end results of the skin’s own metabolism), and bacteria.
All of these factors are important to provide protection.
Lack of essential fatty acids in the diet will lead to a lack of lipids formed in the skin layers, leading to a dryness of the skin.
Reduced water intake leads to dryness due to the lack of available fluids.
The skin surface is a natural PH of between 4.5 and 5.5, if the PH is disrupted due to over washing or washing with products that are too alkaline that PH of the skin is changed and the bacteria cannot survive.
If the acid mantle is compromised the skin will lose too much water through TEWL, trans epidermal water loss.
Other factors affecting the skin:
Excessive sun exposure
Dry heated rooms
Sauna
Alcohol
Caffeine
Diuretics (medication that encourages water loss)
Home Care Recommendations:
Take essential fatty acid supplements e.g.
• Omega 3
• Omega 6
• Evening Primrose Oil
• 2 tablespoons Safflower Oil daily
Topical application of essential fatty acids
Drink water, to increase absorption rate:
• Add 10% apple juice
• Water temperature close to body temperature when drunk.
Test PH level of skin on face
Test PH level of face soap you are using and hair shampoos and conditioner.

Use of non irritating cleansers
Toner (this will bring the PH level of the skin down to natural level quicker)
