Sun exposure, pollution and smoking all cause ‘free radicals.’ A free radical (very simply put) is a damaged building block of our body; they are highly reactive and cause cell damage. This damage can occur in the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin, causing impairment to the skins defense cells (Langerhan cells), deterioration to Glycosaminoglycans (GAG’s); there job includes keeping the tissues of the skin hydrated and maintaining its proper shape, lose of the fluid leads to lines and wrinkles. They can also cause darkening of the skin in patches, loss of color in areas, loss of elastin, and loss of collegan it can even lead to skin cancer.
Topical application of antioxidants neutralizes free radicals. Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Green Tea and Coenzyme Q10 are all examples of antioxidants that can be found in skin care products.
We need to exfoliate our skin, not using an aggressive scrub but a gentle non damaging exfoliant either chemical or physical. It will lift the ‘dead’ skin cells leaving us with a smooth refreshed looking skin. It does not need to be done daily.
